Costa Calma
Rapa Nui is a surf bar on Punta los Molinillos in Costa Calma, and it is more than a place to eat: alongside the food and drink it runs a surf school and Segway excursions, and publishes a weekly programme of what is on. That combination is the point of it — the bar is the meeting place for the school rather than a restaurant that happens to have boards outside.
It is open from nine in the morning until midnight, every day of the week, which covers breakfast before a lesson and a drink long after one.
The setting explains the business. Costa Calma sits on the Jandía peninsula in the far south of Fuerteventura, on the Playa de Sotavento — a stretch of white sand and shallow lagoon several kilometres long. The trade winds blow across it almost without pause, which is why this coast is one of the best-known windsurfing and kitesurfing places in Europe and why a surf school sits on the beach road rather than in the town.
Rapa Nui is the Polynesian name for Easter Island, which is an odd flag to plant in the Atlantic and tells you the register the bar is going for.
The weekly programme is the thing to look at before arriving: what happens here changes by the day, and turning up on the wrong one means a quiet bar rather than the place the reviews describe.
