When is the best time to visit Bulgaria?
It depends on your trip. The Black Sea coast is warmest and busiest from June to early September, while May and late September are quieter and milder. For skiing in Bansko, the season typically runs from December into April. Spring and autumn are ideal for Sofia, Plovdiv and hiking around the Rila and Pirin mountains.
What currency does Bulgaria use now?
Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, becoming the eurozone's 21st member. The old lev was fixed at 1.95583 to the euro and circulated alongside it for a short transition in January 2026, after which the euro became the sole currency. Cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for smaller towns, markets and rural areas.
Do I need a car to get around?
Not always. Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna are walkable and linked by trains and buses, and coastal resorts run local transport in season. But a car helps a lot for the Rila Monastery, mountain villages and hopping between smaller Black Sea towns. Many rural and ski rentals include or can arrange parking, so check the listing details.
What are the must-see highlights beyond the beaches?
Plovdiv's Old Town, Roman theatre and Kapana arts district reward a couple of days. The Rila Monastery, set deep in the mountains, is Bulgaria's most striking UNESCO site.
