The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two-thirds of Hispaniola and manages to be several holidays at once. Most visitors first picture Punta Cana, with its long ribbon of Bávaro beach and the country's densest cluster of resorts, but the island rewards anyone who ventures beyond it. The north coast around Puerto Plata mixes a historic old town, a mountain cable car and the breezy watersports bay of Cabarete. On the northeastern Samaná Peninsula, humpback whales gather offshore in the winter season, waterfalls tumble through the jungle, and the relaxed, French- and Italian-flavoured town of Las Terrenas keeps its bohemian, un-corporate feel. In the middle of it all sits Santo Domingo, whose Colonial Zone is among the oldest European-founded quarters in the Americas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site best explored on foot. Inland, the Cordillera Central rises to the Caribbean's highest peaks around Jarabacoa and Constanza, cool and green and threaded with rivers. Spanish is the language, the peso the currency, and warmth the constant.

When is the best time to visit the Dominican Republic?
The drier, cooler months from around December to April are the most popular for beach holidays and generally bring the most settled weather. This window also overlaps with the winter whale-watching season in Samaná Bay, a highlight of the northeast. The summer and autumn months are warmer and can be wetter, and they fall within the wider Caribbean hurricane season, so it's worth watching forecasts and considering flexible bookings if you travel then.
Do the different regions feel very different from one another?
Very much so. Punta Cana is polished and resort-focused, Santo Domingo is historic and urban, the Samaná Peninsula and Las Terrenas are greener and more low-key, and the central highlands around Jarabacoa are cool mountain country rather than beach at all. Many travelers pair a beach base with a couple of nights in the Colonial Zone or the mountains to get a fuller sense of the island's range.
What currency and language should I expect?
The official language is Spanish, though English is widely understood in the main tourist areas. The local currency is the Dominican peso, and while US dollars and cards are accepted in many resort areas, carrying some local cash is useful for smaller towns, markets and independent hosts. Ask local businesses which payment methods they accept, especially in quieter regions.
How do I get around between beaches, the capital and the mountains?
The country has several airports, so many visitors fly into the region closest to their stay — Punta Cana for the southeast, Puerto Plata for the north coast, or Santo Domingo for the capital. Between regions, private transfers and long-distance coaches are common and comfortable, and hiring a car gives flexibility for the north coast and highlands. Distances are manageable, but allow time on winding mountain and coastal roads.
