Scattered across the South Pacific between Melanesia and Polynesia, Fiji is an archipelago of more than 300 islands, of which only around a hundred are permanently inhabited. The two big islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, hold most of the population and nearly all the daily life, while the smaller island groups deliver the postcard: palm-fringed sand, lagoons the colour of glass and reefs that begin a few strokes from shore. Most journeys start at Nadi on Viti Levu, home to the international airport and the resort island of Denarau, from where catamarans and light aircraft fan out to the Mamanuca and Yasawa groups. Along Viti Levu's southern edge, the Coral Coast strings together villages, family resorts and snorkelling bays, while far to the east lies Taveuni, the lush "Garden Island" prized by divers. What lingers longest, though, is the welcome. A shouted "Bula!", a shared bowl of kava, a village meke danced at dusk — Fijian hospitality is unhurried and genuine. When is the best time to visit Fiji?
Fiji is a year-round destination, but the drier, cooler months from roughly May to October bring the most settled weather and the easiest conditions for boat transfers, diving and beach days. The wetter season runs through the southern-hemisphere summer and can bring humidity and heavier rain; always check current forecasts before you travel.
How do I get around between the islands?
Most visitors fly into Nadi, then continue by boat or air. Catamarans and ferries run from Port Denarau out to the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands, while small resorts and far-flung islands are often reached by domestic flights, light aircraft or seaplanes. Confirm transfer times and schedules with your host when you book, as connections are the main thing to plan around.
Is Fiji a good choice for a honeymoon or a family holiday?
Both, and often on the same island. Fiji has long been a honeymoon favourite for its private, over-water and adults-only resorts, while the Coral Coast and many Mamanuca islands cater warmly to families with shallow lagoons and kids' programmes. Because styles vary so widely island to island, it pays to read each listing carefully and ask the host directly about the vibe.
What are the diving and snorkelling like?
Excellent. Fiji is known for soft-coral reefs — the Rainbow Reef and the Somosomo Strait near Taveuni are especially celebrated — alongside easy snorkelling that starts right off many beaches. Marine life includes reef sharks, turtles and clouds of tropical fish. Bring or hire gear, and ask your host which nearby reefs suit your experience level.
What should I know about Fijian culture and etiquette?
Village life still shapes much of Fiji. A kava (yaqona) ceremony is a genuine mark of welcome, and a meke — traditional song and dance — is often performed for guests. When visiting a village, modest dress and removing hats are appreciated, and it's polite to bring a small gift if you're invited. Your host can guide you on local customs.
