Almost everything runs along the Overseas Highway (U.S. 1), which links the islands from Key Largo down to Key West. Addresses and directions are commonly given by mile marker (MM), counting down toward MM 0 in Key West. A car is the easiest way to explore end to end, and many visitors also get out on the water by boat, kayak or bike.
What is there to do in the Keys besides the beach?
The Keys are built around the water. Key Largo's John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is the first underwater park in the U.S., with snorkeling, scuba diving and glass-bottom boat trips over the reef. Islamorada is known for sportfishing, Marathon and the Lower Keys have wildlife and nature areas, and Key West adds historic streets, museums and its famous sunset celebrations.
When is the best time to visit the Florida Keys?
The dry season from roughly November to April brings warm, sunny, breezy weather and is the most popular stretch, so book early. Summer is hotter and more humid with a chance of storms, but it can be quieter and better value. Water conditions are generally good for diving and fishing throughout the year.
Which island should I base myself on?
