Lake Garda is the biggest of the Italian lakes, and it neatly divides in two. The southern shore is broad and gentle, ringed by moraine hills, vineyards and shallow beaches where families wade into calm, warm water; the northern end narrows dramatically as the mountains close in, funnelling the steady winds that have made it one of Europe's favourite spots for sailing, windsurfing and kiteboarding. Between those two moods sits a string of towns that each stake their own claim: Sirmione on its slender peninsula, crowned by a moated Scaliger castle and Roman ruins; Riva del Garda and Torbole at the wind-blown top; pretty Malcesine below its own hilltop fortress on the eastern shore; and Bardolino, giving its name to the light red wine of the surrounding hills. The mild, almost Mediterranean climate lets olives and lemons grow this far north, and the lake is easy to reach, sitting between Milan and Venice on the main rail line with motorway links from every direction. Add the Gardaland theme park near Peschiera and a lakeside dotted with promenades and ferry stops, and Garda works equally well for beach days, mountain walks, watersports and family trips.

How do I get to Lake Garda?
The lake sits on the main Milan-Venice railway, with stations at Desenzano-Sirmione and Peschiera on the southern shore. By car it is reached via the A4 Turin-Trieste motorway from the south and the A22 Modena-Brenner from the north. The nearest airports are around Verona, Brescia and Milan. Ferries and buses then connect the lakeside towns.
What is the difference between the north and south of the lake?
The south is flatter, warmer and easier for swimming, with beaches, vineyards and gentle hills around towns like Sirmione, Bardolino and Peschiera. The north is mountainous and windier, hemmed by cliffs near Riva del Garda, Torbole and Limone. That reliable wind makes the north a magnet for sailing, windsurfing and kiteboarding, while the south suits relaxed family holidays.
Is Lake Garda good for families?
Very. The shallow southern beaches are ideal for children, lakeside promenades make easy strolling, and the Gardaland amusement park near Peschiera is one of Italy's best known. Ferries turn getting around into part of the fun, and many towns have gentle waterfronts, gelato stops and grassy lidos. It is one of the most family-friendly destinations in northern Italy.
Can I try watersports at Lake Garda?
Yes, especially at the northern end.
