Madeira floats in the Atlantic well off mainland Portugal, a steep volcanic island that trades big sandy beaches for something rarer: green mountains, gentle year-round warmth and a network of walking trails unlike anywhere else. Its signature is the levadas, hundreds of kilometres of centuries-old irrigation channels that thread along contours and through tunnels, giving hikers near-level paths deep into the interior. Overhead rise the peaks, Pico Ruivo the highest at over 1,800 metres, with the famous ridge walk from Pico do Arieiro crossing a world of cloud and rock. The capital, Funchal, tumbles down an amphitheatre of hills above its harbour, all cobbled streets, botanical gardens, a cable car and the tradition of toboggan rides down from Monte. On the wild north coast, Porto Moniz is known for natural swimming pools carved into black volcanic rock and refreshed by the sea. Add the UNESCO-listed laurel forest, dramatic sea cliffs like Cabo Girão, and a subtropical climate kept mild by the surrounding ocean.

How do I get to Madeira?
Madeira has an international airport near Funchal with regular flights from Lisbon, roughly a 1.5-hour hop, and direct connections from many European cities. There is no ferry from the mainland, but a ferry links Madeira to the neighbouring island of Porto Santo, which is famous for its long sandy beach. Most visitors arrive by air and rent a car for the winding roads.
When is the best time to visit?
Madeira is known for a mild subtropical climate that stays pleasant all year, which is a big part of its appeal. Summers are warm and dry, winters cooler and greener with more rain, especially in the mountains and on the north coast. Spring brings flowers and Funchal's flower festival. Whenever you come, pack layers, as the peaks can be far cooler than the coast.
Are there beaches on Madeira?
Not in the classic sandy sense. Madeira's coast is mostly rocky, with pebble beaches, sea-water lidos and the natural volcanic rock pools at Porto Moniz. If you want a proper golden-sand beach, take the ferry to the neighbouring island of Porto Santo. Most people come to Madeira for hiking, gardens and scenery rather than for lying on sand.
