Sri Lanka squeezes an astonishing range of experiences into an island you can cross in a day or two. The palm-lined south coast, anchored by the walled Dutch fort of Galle and the beach towns of Mirissa and Unawatuna, is the classic sun-and-surf stretch, with whale-watching offshore in season. Inland, the hill country climbs into cool tea plantations, with Kandy's lakeside temple and the much-photographed train ride to Ella. To the north of the centre lies the Cultural Triangle, where the rock fortress of Sigiriya rises dramatically from the jungle alongside ancient cities and cave temples. Over on the east coast, Arugam Bay is one of Asia's best-known surf spots. The catch is timing: Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so the south and west coasts are generally best from around December to April, while the east coast, including Arugam Bay, is better from roughly May to September. Add friendly hosts, excellent food and short travel distances, and you have a country that rewards slow, curious travel.

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons, so the answer depends on where you are going. The south and west coasts, including Galle, Mirissa and Unawatuna, plus the hill country, are generally best from around December to April. The east coast, including Arugam Bay, is usually at its best from roughly May to September. This means there is somewhere pleasant to visit for most of the year if you plan your route around the weather.
Can I combine beaches, hill country and ancient sites in one trip?
Yes, and that combination is one of the main reasons people love Sri Lanka. The island is compact, so many travellers pair the south-coast beaches with the tea-country towns of Kandy and Ella and the Cultural Triangle around Sigiriya. Distances are short by international standards, though mountain and rural roads can be slow, so it is worth allowing extra time between stops.
Is the Kandy to Ella train really worth it?
The hill-country rail journey through the tea plantations is one of Sri Lanka's signature experiences and is widely regarded as one of the most scenic train rides in Asia. It winds past waterfalls, forest and green tea slopes. Because it is popular, reserved seats can sell out ahead, so if a guaranteed seat matters to you it is wise to arrange tickets in advance.
Is Arugam Bay only for experienced surfers?
Arugam Bay is best known as a surf destination and draws board riders during the east-coast season, roughly May to September. It has a range of breaks, and many visitors come to learn as well as to ride established point breaks, so it is not only for experts. Outside the surf season the town is much quieter, so timing your visit matters.
