Turks and Caicos is a British Overseas Territory of low, sun-bleached islands and cays scattered at the southeastern edge of the Bahamas chain. What draws most visitors is the water: broad, shallow flats in extraordinary shades of turquoise, long stretches of soft white sand, and a barrier reef that makes the islands a favourite for diving and snorkelling. The main gateway is Providenciales, usually shortened to Provo, home to the famous Grace Bay beach and most of the territory's hotels, restaurants and services. Beyond Provo, the pace slows quickly. Quieter cays and islands, some barely inhabited, offer empty beaches, boating and a real sense of getting away from it all, while the capital sits on the smaller island of Grand Turk. The reefs and drop-offs are a central attraction, with wall diving, snorkelling and, in season, marine wildlife offshore. This is a place built around the sea rather than nightlife or dramatic landscapes; the islands are flat and dry, and the appeal is the colour of the water and the quality of the sand. Most travellers fly into Providenciales and reach the outer islands by domestic flight or boat.

How do I get to Turks and Caicos?

When is the best time to visit?
