The Azores are nine volcanic islands scattered across the mid-Atlantic, a green, wave-washed corner of Portugal roughly halfway to North America. Remote and deeply scenic, they feel like a world of their own: emerald craters, steaming geothermal valleys, hydrangea-lined lanes and some of the best whale watching in the world. São Miguel, the largest island and home to the capital Ponta Delgada, is the usual first stop. Here the twin crater lakes of Sete Cidades, one green and one blue, sit in a vast caldera, while in Furnas the ground itself bubbles and steams, and locals slow-cook cozido stew for hours in the volcanic soil. Out in the central group, Pico island is crowned by Mount Pico, at 2,351 metres the highest point in all of Portugal, rising straight from the sea above old vineyards walled in black lava. The waters around the islands teem with whales and dolphins, drawing boat trips from spring onward. Cool, changeable and gloriously green, the Azores reward walkers, divers and anyone chasing landscapes few people have seen.

How do I get to the Azores?
Most visitors fly into São Miguel's airport at Ponta Delgada, with connections from mainland Portugal and a number of European and North American cities. Inter-island flights and ferries then link the nine islands, though sea crossings depend on the weather and season. Many people focus on one or two islands per trip rather than trying to see them all at once.
When is the best time to visit and what's the weather like?
