Corfu is the lush, green face of Greece in the Ionian Sea, an island shaped as much by Venetian, French and British rule as by the Mediterranean around it. That layered past is written across Corfu Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where tall pastel buildings lean over narrow lanes called kantounia, two old fortresses guard the sea, and an arcaded esplanade opens onto a cricket pitch left behind by the British. Away from the town, the island is unusually verdant: silvery olive groves, cypress hills and vineyards roll down to a coastline of hidden coves and clear water. On the northwest coast, Paleokastritsa layers together monastery, headlands and a string of small bays that are a favourite for swimming and boat trips. Elsewhere you'll find long sandy stretches, cliff-backed beaches and quiet inland villages where life still moves slowly. Corfu's mild, wetter climate keeps it greener than the drier Aegean islands, and its history gives every walk a sense of somewhere layered and lived-in.

When is the best time to visit Corfu?
May, June, September and early October usually offer the best balance — warm seas, green landscapes and comfortable temperatures without peak-summer crowds. Spring is especially lush and flowery thanks to Corfu's wetter climate, while July and August are hottest and busiest, ideal if beach and nightlife are your priority.
How do I get to Corfu?
Corfu has an international airport just outside the main town, with seasonal flights from across Europe and connections to Athens. By sea, ferries link Corfu with the mainland port of Igoumenitsa in under a couple of hours, and there are longer routes and international links toward Italy, which makes combining Corfu with a road trip realistic.
What makes Corfu different from other Greek islands?
Its greenery and its history. Corfu is markedly more forested and fertile than many drier Aegean islands, with dense olive groves and cypress hills. Centuries of Venetian, French and British influence also give the architecture, food and even pastimes a distinctive character you feel most strongly in the Old Town.
